Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Photofacial Treatments

~ Restore Your Radiant Complexion from the Inside Out!~

As summer ends, patients have again frequently requested IPL photofacial treatments to reverse the sun damage caused by relaxing hours spent sunbathing by the ocean, pool, or in other outdoor activities. But IPL procedures can address much more than sun damage. In today’s post, we’ll review this technology, the conditions it addresses, and what you can expect at your IPL appointment and beyond.

IPL Technology

IPL employs intense, broad-spectrum pulses of light to penetrate the epidermis safely and heats the pigmentation in the dermis to destroy unwanted melanin and reduce or eliminate discolorations and visible veins. The hand-held applicator also emits cooling energy to prevent any damage to the surface or surrounding tissue of the skin. It also stimulates collagen production to help the body resurface from the inner layers out to reduce other

dermal irregularities. As a side benefit, IPL also finds and weakens hair follicles to diminish unwanted hair on the face, chest, and back.

The Benefits of IPL

These FDA-approved photofacials offer an effective, non-surgical way to target and reduce or remove a variety of skin conditions on the face, neck, back, shoulders, chest, and back of the hands, including:

  • Unwanted pigmentation in the form of dark spots from sun damage, liver and age spots, and freckles
  • Broken blood vessels, spider veins, and rosacea capillaries
  • Uneven clarity and texture of the skin

What you can expect

  • The Consultation ~ Your exploration of IPL, like all other services at RX Aesthetics, begins with a complimentary consult with a trained professional to evaluate your condition and determine if you are a candidate for IPL or another procedure. We will also suggest a treatment plan of 3 – 4 sessions, a month apart.
  • Before Your Appointment ~ We advise you to stay out of the sun and refrain from tanning beds and creams, and products containing retinoids for one month. With your physician’s approval, we advise avoiding over-the-counter and prescription blood thinning medications, if possible. Do not wax the area or get a chemical peel for at least two weeks prior. You also should not wear cosmetics or fragrances to your appointment.
  • During Your Appointment ~ Each visit will last between thirty and sixty minutes, depending on the severity of your condition and speed of recovery. There is only a minor stinging sensation in some patients, which the application of ice can mitigate.
  • After Your Appointment ~ One of the beauties of IPL is that there is virtually no downtime! You may experience some redness or swelling that lasts for a day or two. You may also see some bruising when the IPL is used to address facial capillaries. Spots and vessels usually begin to clear up in one to two weeks. Some spots turn gray before disappearing. For these reasons, we recommend that our patients wait until after any big event on your calendar to come in for your procedure. Like always, wear sunscreen of at least 30 SPF to keep your skin safe from further environmental damage.
